DELAWARE- With Independence Day celebrations in full swing, Delaware officials are reminding locals about what fireworks are allowed — and what can land you in trouble.
Under Delaware law, only certain ground-based fireworks like sparklers, spinners, fountains, jumping jacks, and ground blooms are allowed. These nonairborne, nonexplosive novelty items can only be used on July 4, the third day of Diwali, Dec. 31, and Jan. 1. Adults can purchase them during specific windows: June 4 to July 4, 30 days before Diwali, and from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1 each year.
Aerial and explosive fireworks are banned year-round, such as bottle rockets, firecrackers, Roman candles, and any device that shoots into the air or explodes. Bringing fireworks purchased out of state back into Delaware is also illegal.
State leaders emphasize that misuse or illegal possession of fireworks is a misdemeanor that could result in fines, while injuries or property damage caused by fireworks may bring felony charges.
Safety reminders include keeping a bucket of water or garden hose nearby, never using fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and keeping young children away from fireworks, even sparklers.
