Spelling Bee
SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Can you spell E-X-C-I-T-I-N-G? A Saturday spelling bee will send one winner to the national stage.

On Saturday, a regional spelling bee for the Scripps National Spelling Bee will take place at Sussex Academy. The 1 P.M. competition will consist of spellers from around the region--10 different elementary schools in total.

Jill DiPaolo, Director of the Milton Library said, "In years past, schools that participated with Scripps, would send their school winners to an online bee and in this situation we have an in person bee, we have all of the schools included if they signed up for it. So it's really giving a more equal opportunity for Sussex County kids to get this opportunity."

DiPaolo says Sussex County's growth is one of the reasons for the regional bee.

Fifth grader at Milton Elementary, Madison Clayton said, "I've always wanted to be in the spelling bee. It's always been something I've wanted to do - I've always been one of those friends where it's like 'hey, can you spell this for me? Like I need help spelling this.' And I would spell it for them."

The bee is sponsored by Sussex County libraries.

"It feeds into the reason why reading is so important. It's wonderful when a student can read one of the books and recognize a word as something they studied and learned and performed on stage." said County Librarian, Rachel Lynch.

The winner of this regional bee will go on to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in DC, representing Sussex County.

Tomorrow's competition has limited seated. If you would like to watch online, you can do so here.
