DEWEY BEACH, Del. - Southern Delaware Tourism announced its 2023 awards during a ceremony on Wednesday at the Lighthouse Cove Event Center. The organization recognized outstanding contributions to the region's thriving tourism industry, celebrating events, attractions, organizations, and people that enhance the allure of Sussex County. 

According to Southern Delaware Tourism, the industry contributed over $2.7 billion to the economy and supported nearly 24,000 jobs.

Winner: Rehoboth Beach Main Street's Margarita Crawl

Rehoboth Beach Main Street collaborated with Dano's Tequila to create the Margarita Crawl. The inaugural event attracted 600 attendees on June 3, 2023. The organization says it aims to grow the Margarita Crawl and make it a fundraiser for the organization.

Winner: Milton Chamber of Commerce & Friends of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge Horseshoe Crab & Shorebird Festival

Celebrating its over two-decade legacy, the Horseshoe Crab & Shorebird Festival in historic downtown Milton educates and entertains attendees about the unique spectacle of horseshoe crab spawning and migrating shorebirds. The festival, a vital tourism and economic driver, attracted over 7,000 attendees from 15 states in 2022. Local artisans, conservation groups, and environmental partners contribute to the festival's success, emphasizing the ecological importance of the Delaware Bay region.

Beyond the beach loop, the Jolly Trolley provides year-round transportation services to major transportation hubs, private charters, weddings, and local attraction tours. The company actively participates in community events, supporting various causes and organizations.

The Bethany Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce has raised almost $85,000 for local non-profit organizations through its events, including the Bethany Boardwalk Arts Festival. This impactful contribution not only enhances tourism but also supports numerous community organizations.

Winner: Marie Mayor

Marie Mayor, co-owner of Lavender Fields at Warrington Manor, has left an indelible mark on Southern Delaware's agritourism landscape. Actively involved in various tourism and community organizations, Marie's contributions extend beyond her lavender farm. As the recipient of the Tourism Legacy Award, Marie's impact on agritourism in the region is celebrated, honoring her dedication and influence on the local tourism community.
