LEWES, Del. - A young osprey, that had been closely watched by viewers of the Cape Henlopen State Park osprey nest webcam, was taken by an eagle over the weekend.
DNREC confirmed Monday, Aug. 3, "that, over the weekend, an eagle took the young osprey from the nest at Cape Henlopen State Park."
The update comes just days after Cape Henlopen State Park announced it would not intervene with the chick despite concerns from people watching the nest online about the timing of feedings by its parents.
At the time, park staff said they had evaluated the situation and determined that intervening would pose a greater risk than leaving the bird undisturbed. Staff said the chick was nearing fledging age.
Park staff also noted that attempting to reach the nest platform could have startled the chick, causing it to fledge too early and increasing the chance it could be hurt.
