DOVER, Del.- Delaware high school students have a chance to help shape education policy across the state.

Gov. Matt Meyer has appointed Tyler Gunter, a senior at MOT Charter High School, to serve as the student member of the Delaware State Board of Education.

House Bill 119, known as the Freedom to Read Act, would ensure all Delawareans, regardless of age or background, have the right to access books and educational materials, while establishing a transparent process for reviewing content challenges.

Sen. Laura Sturgeon, chair of the Senate Education Committee, emphasized that these reforms aim to restore trust in school boards following high-profile controversies in Delaware.

The Delaware Senate is tackling public education funding reform. Tuesday the Senate passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 201, creating a commission to review and recommend reforms to the state’s public education funding system.
