MILFORD, Del. - Dual language immersion teachers and students at Benjamin Banneker Elementary School celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month with a school-wide parade Wednesday morning.

Liliana Ayllon, a third-grade Spanish immersion teacher from Mexico, expressed her enthusiasm about sharing her culture with students and colleagues.

"This month, I shared a lot of activities with them that they could do with their students so they could get familiar with the things that they were going to see in the parade," she said.

The parade was a highlight for students like Rhys Wyatt, a fifth grader.

"I enjoyed it a lot because I got to see my old teachers, my old classrooms. I got to see my brother," Wyatt said.

The Milford School District honors Hispanic culture in the classroom, through its immersion classes, and school-wide, engaging all students in the celebration.

"We have a big Hispanic community, and we just want them to feel welcome and include it in everything that we do in the school, and we decided to take the initiative and be proactive this year to make that a big event," Ilianny Abad, dual language specialist at the district, said.

Ayllon highlighted the collaborative effort behind the parade.

"My favorite part was actually collaborating with my parents of the kids in my room. They really helped me put all the costumes together. They brought a lot of props, and the kids were really happy to do it. They were really excited when they were picking their costume," she said.

The Milford School District is committed to celebrating cultural diversity with more events in the coming years.
