Office of the State Fire Marshal Patch

Crews determined the item was non-hazardous and posed no threat to the public.

SALISBURY, Md.- A suspicious item discovered Monday afternoon in downtown Salisbury turned out to be harmless, following a response from local fire crews and the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s bomb squad.

Around 12:13 p.m., firefighters responding to a brush fire near the 200 block of East Market Street spotted what appeared to be a PVC pipe bomb. Out of caution, they called in bomb technicians to examine the item.

Crews determined the item was non-hazardous and posed no threat to the public.

Explosive and accelerant detection K9s were also brought in to search the area. The scene was cleared by about 2:40 p.m., and no injuries were reported.

“We’re grateful for the quick and professional response from everyone involved,” said Acting State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray. “Incidents like this show just how important teamwork and readiness are when keeping the public safe.”

The Office of the State Fire Marshal reminds residents to follow the “Three R’s” if they come across a suspicious object: Recognize, Retreat and Report.
