MILTON, De -The Carey Storehouse is one of the oldest commercial buildings in Milton.  It was built in the early 1830's by Joseph Carey, the grandfather of the future governor of Wyoming by the same name. The storehouse was one of several businesses in the town during its shipbuilding boom period. Carey died in 1834 and his son Robert took over, operating a general store in the building for several years. He later would lease the building to other people while maintaining ownership.

The building stayed with the Carey family well into the twentieth century. In 1972 it was sold to the King family who would make it the original home of Kings Homemade Ice Cream. In 1982 the Carey Storehouse was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The marker next to it was erected in 2006 and was the 208th in Sussex County.
