MARYLAND - The Office of the State Fire Marshal is warning people across Maryland about a social media trend that has already led to multiple fires and emergency responses in schools.

Known as the "Chromebook Challenge," the trend involves students inserting metallic objects, such as pencils or paper clips, into the charging ports of laptops and other devices.

As of May 5, authorities have confirmed several incidents linked to the challenge resulting in sparks, smoke and in some cases, battery fires triggered by thermal runaway reactions. Some schools have been forced to evacuate as a result, and students involved have faced disciplinary action.

"We want to emphasize the importance of educating students about the dangers associated with these acts," said Acting State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray. "It is crucial that parents and educators work together to promote a culture of safety and responsibility regarding electronic devices."

The fire marshal's office urges schools to reinforce technology safety policies and encourages open conversations between parents and children about the risks tied to the challenge.
