DELAWARE BAY - Coast Guard Station Cape May rescued four people aboard a boat while it was taking on water Friday afternoon.
According to to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay received a report from mariners aboard the vessel, saying they had been struck by a tanker vessel and were taking on water.
The Coast Guard urges people to be cautious as the Delaware Bay region is impacted by Tropical Storm Ophelia through Sunday. The Coast Guard says these conditions create life-threatening beach hazards, including dangerous rip currents and large battering waves.
“Tropical storm Ophelia will create dangerous conditions,” says Capt. Kate Higgins-Bloom, commander of Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay. “Even the most experienced mariner can be overwhelmed. Think twice before you go out on the water. Monitor trusted weather sources, know your limits, and plan for emergencies.”
