SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- There are six shelters in Sussex County that the homeless can go to this winter.

Georgetown Presbyterian Church is gearing up for its shelter to open.

"Once you’re here you fill out a log form your first time coming here and then after that they are free to come back another night and just sign in underneath their name," Site Coordinator Mari Ellyn Hellard said. "After they check in and they understand and if they don’t have any questions, they’ll come over and they’ll grab one of these bags and they’ll get a sticker and put their name on there."

Director of Code Purple Sussex County Gissela Cruc says the shelters are in decent shape with volunteers.

"We should be covered for the next two weeks with volunteers," Cruc said. "We always are in need of volunteers especially for the holidays. I understand that they want to be with family and friends but it’s always in need for around that time."

At the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford is where there will be a men’s only shelter. Site Coordinator Tom Chilton says the homeless situation in Milford has grown over the last several years.

"Six years ago, we may have had 13 or 14 people in here not knowing that there is another 25 out there," Chilton said. "I’d say there’s probably thirty to forty homeless people in Milford."

According to the National Alliance To End Homelessness, there are nearly 1,100 people who are homeless in Delaware each night.

Code Purple is still looking for volunteers to fill up shifts especially overnights. Shelters will be open through March 15.

Code Purple Sussex County is looking to give the homeless relief and support as they navigate through a tough winter ahead.
