GEORGETOWN, Del.- A 40-year-old inmate at Sussex Correctional Institution died Thursday after showing signs of a medical emergency, according to the Delaware Department of Correction.

Officials say Jason Corkell, of Felton, became ill around 4:30 p.m. while in his housing unit. As he was being escorted to the prison infirmary, he became unresponsive. Medical staff began life-saving efforts, and paramedics transported him to Beebe Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m.

Corkell had been in DOC custody since June 25 and was awaiting a Violation of Probation hearing related to a shoplifting conviction.

The Delaware Division of Forensic Science is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
