DOVER, Del. - House Bill 93, which was voted out of the Delaware House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, would restrict school resource officers and school constables from assisting federal immigration authorities without permission from the state attorney general.
Candy Sebastián González, a rising senior in a local school district, said she has seen the fear that some of her classmates feel about attending school.
For that reason, she said she is hopeful about the bill.
"I do think that that will bring much relief to not just my school, but tons of other schools where there are more Latin American people at those schools," Sebastián González said.
Some advocates hope the legislation will achieve what they refer to as "the five victories," noting it still needs to pass the full House and Senate and receive the governor’s signature to become law.
For some, the concern goes beyond education policy.
"They should not be the ones cooperating with ICE. They should not be the ones telling ICE how many, who are the children, probably the names of these students, when their parents come to pick them up," said Charito Calvachi-Mateyko of the Votamos, We Vote Coalition.
Rep. Claire Snyder-Hall (D-District 14) is a co-sponsor.
House Bill 93 now moves to the House floor for further consideration.
