Dover, Del. — The Delaware State Housing Authority (DSHA) has announced significant adjustments to the Delaware Mortgage Relief Program in response to the impending depletion of federal funding. The program, which has been a crucial source of financial assistance for thousands of Delaware residents, is adapting to the changing landscape.
Effective immediately, the Delaware Mortgage Relief Program will no longer accept new applications for covering delinquent homeowner association fees, homeowner's insurance, and lot rent fees. This decision coincides with the gradual exhaustion of federal funding, which was allocated through the American Rescue Plan Act and Homeowner Assistance Fund.
Applications for monthly payment assistance will continue to be accepted until January 31, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. Delaware residents may still apply for financial aid to address delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, and eligible utilities, including water and sewer.
Since its inception in June 2022, the Delaware Mortgage Relief Program has served as a lifeline for over 2,900 households, preventing displacement and foreclosure. The program's impact has been substantial, with an average assistance amount of $12,308 per household.
With federal funding expected to be depleted by the fall of 2024, DSHA is actively engaged in identifying alternative programs to support homeowners in the future. These forthcoming initiatives aim to continue providing assistance to Delaware residents facing housing-related financial challenges.
