SELBYVILLE

A bill awaits Gov. Matt Meyer's signature that will create four election districts for Selbyville's Town Council.

SELBYVILLE, Del. — A bill passed by the Delaware General Assembly will bring major changes to the Town Council in the town of Selbyville.

Senate Bill 39, which amends the town’s charter, will divide Selbyville into four election districts for Town Council, each with roughly equal population based on the latest federal census. Under the new system, each council member will represent one district and be elected solely by the voters living in that district. Anyone seeking to become mayor or a member of the Town Council must have lived in Selbyville for at least two years.

In addition, the measure updates the staggered term structure for council members and makes several technical revisions to align with current legislative standards.

Because the bill alters a municipal charter, it required a two-thirds majority in both the Delaware House and Senate, in accordance with Article IX, Section 1 of the state constitution. Selbyville holds its municipal elections on the first Saturday of March. The change goes into effect upon Governor Matt Meyer's (D) signature.
