SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - Nearly 150,000 Delawareans will travel over Thanksgiving weekend, according to projections from AAA. Travel numbers are up this year, with a nearly 2 percent increase in drivers and over 4 percent increase in those flying compared to last year.
"Thanksgiving travel volume is expected to be the third highest since 2001, continuing a year-long trend for strong travel demand," said Jana Tidwell, manager of public and government affairs for AAA in the Mid-Atlantic region. "As we approach some of the busiest travel days of the year with perhaps less than ideal travel weather conditions, AAA urges travelers to plan ahead and pack patience for a safe and stress-free travel experience."
More than 90 percent of local travelers, or 136,000 people, will be hitting the road, while over 10,000 more are expected to catch a flight. AAA is expecting to respond to nearly 1,100 member calls in Delaware alone.
Nationally, 55.4 million travelers are projected to travel 50 miles or more over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which spans five days from Wednesday through Sunday. Wednesday is expected to be the busiest day on the roads, with departures in the morning or after 6 p.m. recommended by travel groups to avoid the biggest delays.
