Brandywine Valley SPCA Celebrates Milestone With 100th Animal Rescue Flight

GEORGETOWN, Del. -- The Brandywine Valley SPCA completed a milestone over the weekend-- Its 100th flight in a 4-year partnership with the 'Wings of Rescue' organization landed in Georgetown, Delaware.

About 99 animals were rescued from a partner shelter in Louisiana, the Tangipahoa Parish Animal Services. BVSPCA said it helped that shelter increase lifesaving from 20% to 90%.

BVSPCA Development Manager Jody Rini said over the years, more than 7,000 at-risk pets have been saved and the need for such a rescue varies.

"It is somewhat of a schedule but depending on, you know, weather conditions, depending on if some kind of a weather issue has happened, we'll continue to bring them in and it's usually two or three times a month that we're getting them in and sometimes more frequently than that depending on the need," Rini said.

Gene Gable of "Wings of Rescue' said the pets the organization typically flies are already up for adoption and in this case, the animals were rescued from an overcrowded shelter.

"The southern states are one of the places where we typically get a lot of our dogs and cats... right now, there's an interesting dynamic going on where some of the urban areas in the United States are short of pets and don't have enough adoptable animals and of course, some of the more rural areas and just certain parts of the country for whatever reason, have too many animals so, we try to make that balance and work it out," he said.

It's a journey of healing for most of these dogs and cats that come to the First State.

"We want them here, but we want them here for a very short time," Rini said.

These pets will be up for adoption starting Tuesday in shelters throughout Delaware (including Georgetown, New Castle, & Dover). Adoption fees range as high as $500 and as low as $75. All pets that are suitable for adoption have been examined thoroughly, are spayed/neutered  and are up-to-date with their vaccines.

Rini said the BVSPCA is also looking to hosting 'Bark on the Boards' event in Rehoboth Beach on Saturday, Oct. 16, which offers fun demonstrations and activities at the bandstand and on the boardwalk for four-legged family members and their human owners.
