MILTON, Del. - The Sussex County Land Trust and local rotaries have revealed plans to add to their recreational open spaces in Sussex County with a 'Can-Do' playground at Stephen P. Hudson Park. This initiative aims to provide an inclusive space where children, including those with disabilities, can play and thrive.
Mark Chura, Executive Director for the Land Trust, said,
"They really are facilities for children and adults of all level of ability. Nobody feels segregated and it's a very interesting design that works very well."
Stephen Cunningham, who frequents the Lewes Georgetown Trail, highlighted the significance of this addition and the new trailhead,
"It provides a seamless extension for my walks, eliminating concerns about passing traffic or obstacles encountered on the trail."
The Trust has outlined further enhancements, including the addition of bathrooms and picnic tables, aiming to create a more inviting and accommodating outdoor space.
Recent property agreements, such as the Hopkins Preserve on Sweet Briar Road, underline the Trust's commitment to safeguarding natural landscapes from potential development.
Yet, challenges persist, notably in acquiring an 88-acre plot off New Road called Ard Na Gréine.
"Additional support is needed as it's the last piece of that part of coastal Sussex that's not protected." said Chura.
Donations to go towards the nonprofit's preservation efforts can be made through the website here or if you are walking along the Lewes Georgetown Trail at Hudson Park, there is a QR code on signs to scan with your phone.
The Land Trust expects to fundraise for a year and begin construction of the playground after.
