FENWICK ISLAND, Del.- Rising seas are an issue of serious concern for coastal communities around the world. In Fenwick Island the Town is trying to meet the challenge head on.
Tuesday at Town Hall the Town Council hosted a meeting focused on flood mitigation in the area. According to Council Member Richard Benn, a recently completed resiliency study, shows that 50 years from now the projected sea level rise would flood 80% of the Fenwick Island Bay Side homes two times every day.
Councilman Benn called the challenge ahead "a daunting task with lots of expensive things to be done."
During Tuesday's meeting the Town brought in Matt Jones, The Program Manager for the Division of Water. Part of the reason Jones was at this meeting was to breakdown the rules for adding, changing, or replacing bulkheads and other structures that help prevent flooding.
In the decades to come coastal communities will face tough challenges if sea levels does continue to rise. Councilman Benn hopes that meetings like the one hosted Tuesday will help keep Fenwick Island "ahead of the curve."
