GREENWOOD, Del. — As 2023 winds down and Sussex County residents prepare for the new year, CoastTV has taken a look at a cherished annual tradition: the hunt for the perfect Christmas tree.
There are a variety of choices at Don’s Tree Farm in Greenwood. The farm offers a diverse array of Christmas trees, each with its own unique character. Owner Don Hallowell says his farm's trees, including the fragrant Canaan Fir and the long-lasting Frazier Fir, are known as the "Cadillacs of Christmas trees" and are particularly popular among customers.
What Makes a Good Tree?
Customers at Don’s Tree Farm cite various qualities that make up the perfect real tree. Some prefer a robust size, while others value the scent that adds to their home’s festive ambiance.
Important considerations include inspecting a tree from all angles to make sure it is uniform and doesn't have bare spots or broken branches, though some are big fans of a Charlie Brown style of tree. Grab a branch and pull your hand outward- trees that will last in your home a long time won't shed a lot of needles.
The Journey to the Perfect Tree
Finding the ideal tree is not just about aesthetics; it also involves hard work and patience.
"These trees here won't be ready for about eight years," Hallowell said, gesturing to some saplings. "But with a bit of love and care, they'll one day be ready to brighten someone's home."
Though numbers vary, a good starting point for decorating is 100 lights per foot or foot-and-a-half of tree height, so a 6-foot tree should have around 600 lights.
The Larger Message of Christmas
No matter where you get your tree or how you decorate it, taking a journey through Sussex County to find the perfect tree serves as a reminder of the holiday spirit.
"Just as any tree can light up a home, any person can light up the world," Hallowell said, highlighting the broader significance of the Christmas season.
