CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND, Va. - A flamingo was spotted in the waters between Chincoteague and Wallops islands early Monday afternoon.
"What a beautiful bird and a rare sighting!" said the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce, which shared a video of the bird on Facebook.

This isn't the first time flamingos have appeared in uncommon places. In late September, five flamingos were seen in Wisconsin, a first in the state's history. They've also been seen in other states, likely due to strong winds from Hurricane Idalia in late August that threw them off course.
According to the San Diego Zoo, there are six known species of flamingos, four of which live throughout the Americas. They're often found in lagoons or large, shallow lakes, with the closest ones found in the Caribbean and around Central and South America.
