DELAWARE- The Delaware House of Representatives has approved a bill that would establish a new state-level Department of Veterans Affairs, aiming to enhance services and support for the more than 70,000 veterans living in the First State.
“As a veteran, I know the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform and the challenges they face when their service ends,” said Rep. Carson. “This Department is about meeting their needs, addressing their concerns, and honoring our commitment to those who have served and sacrificed for our country.”
Lawmakers say the department would focus on improving access to health care, benefits, and other essential services. It would also serve as a dedicated advocate for veterans at the state and federal levels, aiming to connect them with millions in untapped federal resources, including enrollment in the federal VA system.
According to the bill, the new agency would also house the current Commission of Veterans Affairs, which would continue operating under its existing structure. For now, the department will be managed under the Department of State, but a transition plan will be developed to establish it as an independent agency by July 1, 2030.
“In addition to our utmost respect, our veterans deserve comprehensive care, specialized resources, and thoughtful advocacy,” said Sen. Poore. “Delaware veterans will benefit immensely from a dedicated department in our government’s executive branch.”
The department would also be tasked with exploring new elder care options and potentially creating additional veterans homes to serve Delaware’s aging veteran population.
House Substitute 1 for House Bill 1 now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
