LEWES, Del. – City officials in Lewes are considering partnering with DelDOT to conduct a city-funded safety study on Savannah Road as concerns rise over traffic and bicycle safety.
Lewes local Anna Denney supports the initiative, citing the need for improvements.
"There's a lot more bikers than there used to be and just a tremendous amount of traffic," said Denney. "Something needs to be done. I don't know what it is, but they need to investigate and find out."
In January, the city passed an ordinance banning parking on part of Savannah Road due to bike safety.
The city says the proposed study would assess more than just parking concerns.
Joseph Kehoe, a local cyclist, expressed frustration with the current infrastructure.
"They talk about being a bike town, but it's really restricted a lot to the bikers," said Kehoe.
City officials say the study could even take a look at areas such as Dutchmans Harvest and Overfall Preserve.
The study was proposed at a city council workshop on March 27.
