LEWES, Del. - As beach season approaches, members of the Lewes Fire Department took to the water this past weekend to sharpen their water rescue skills in anticipation of a busy summer.

The training began with a refresher on the department’s water rescue gear before firefighters headed to the boat to put their skills into practice. They worked on key techniques including victim removal using a rescue swimmer and deploying throwable rope bags.

According to the fire department's website, Lewes has two marine units among its life-saving resources including: five fire engines, a tower ladder, a rescue engine, two brush trucks, six basic life support ambulances, and more.

Lewes Fire Department also says on its website that it is the busiest fire department in Sussex County and the fifth busiest in the state, not including Wilmington.
