Lewes Subcommittee Looking Towards Light Pollution Remedies

LEWES, Del.- A Lewes subcommittee is looking to lessen the city's light pollution footprint.

The Environmental subcommittee is preparing an ordinance that would change outdoor lights around the city.

These lights would be aimed more downward, reducing the impact of the light on the night sky.

Subcommittee member Melanie Moser says light pollution impacts more than the visuals in the sky.

"The wonder of the Milky Way is not evident anymore unless you're in Utah somewhere," she said. "Lighting at night has affected animals. Migrating birds get just disoriented, animals that depend on the dark can't find their way."

Moser also added that pollution sensitive lights would also reduce cost as they use less energy.

The subcommittee is expected to discuss the possible ordinance in detail on Dec. 4. The ordinance would need to make it through the city's planning commission and city council before going into effect.
