Local nonprofit asks for bike donations to help homeless

MILFORD, Del. - Homelessness remains an on going problem for the City of Milford, but a local nonprofit is taking a different approach to getting those in need back on two wheels.

'Milford Advocacy for the Homeless' is asking for donations of bicycles of all conditions for them to be repaired and go back out to displaced neighbors.

According to the organization, transportation is a major need for at least 40 others in Milford. That's why bike donations are so important.

"What we found is when we give them those bikes, first is better mental health, and the second thing is more of them get jobs because they have a way to get back and fourth and so it's a really win win situation." said Martha Gery, President and Founder of Milford Advocacy for the Homeless.

Since homeless person, James Case, was gifted a bike from the organization, he has been able to increase his range and apply for jobs like at 'God's Way Thrift Store'.

"It gets me around. I can put it on the bus when I need to use the bus - and that's going to get me where I need to be because I need to get my birth certificate, my social and my ID because I lost my wallet a while back." said Case.

'Milford Advocacy for the Homeless' is also working to repair a bus that will act as transportation for those in need and to hand out meals to even more people.
