MARYLAND – The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is inviting Marylanders to take part in a First Day Hike during the 2024 New Year's Weekend.
According to the department, the "First Day Hike" initiative, part of a nationwide effort led by America's State Parks, encourages states to offer outdoor hiking opportunities to mark the beginning of the year.
Maryland's State Parks will provide two types of hikes: ranger-led excursions and self-guided trails. Ranger-led hikes offer interpretation by Park Rangers and often require advance registration, while self-guided trails are marked and available throughout the weekend.
“First Day Hikes are a great way to start the New Year off on the right foot... or boot,” said Maryland Park Service Director Angela Crenshaw. “Maryland State Parks are offering a variety of opportunities all over the state to get out and hike to celebrate the start of 2024."
According to the department, on the Eastern Shore, hikers can bring their binoculars for a guided "First Day Bird Walk." For those interested in horse riding, people can bring their horses for a “New Year’s Day Ride” at Tuckahoe State Park. For families, the department says there will be a “First Day Family Hike” along the beach at Assateague State Park.
