DELAWARE -Gov. Matt Meyer (D) has named Alison McGonigal acting secretary of the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth, and Their Families following the retirement of Secretary Steven E. Yeatman.
McGonigal assumes the leadership role Sept. 1. She has served as DSCYF deputy secretary since 2023.
Yeatman announced his retirement in August after 30 years of service to Delaware families. His career included work at nearly every level of DSCYF. He was appointed deputy secretary under former Gov. John Carney and was reappointed by Meyer last year.
"Acting Secretary McGonigal has been a trusted leader within DSCYF, and I have full confidence in her ability to guide the Department through this transition, given her deep commitment to Delaware's children and families," Meyer said. "That commitment has been evident throughout her career, and I know it will only grow stronger in this new and important role. I'm grateful for her leadership, and I look forward to continuing our work together to support Delaware's families."
McGonigal has more than 28 years of experience in human services, with work focused on justice reform for teenagers, program and facility improvements, strategic planning, workforce development and operational improvements.
She began her DSCYF career as a case manager at the New Castle County Detention Center. After several promotions, she served as a division director from 2017 to 2023.

I am committed to advancing the important work underway, supporting our dedicated staff, and working collaboratively to make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve.”
As acting secretary, McGonigal will oversee department operations involving child welfare, justice services for teenagers, prevention and behavioral health, student education and management support services.
She will also work with the Governor’s Office, cabinet secretaries and department leaders on operations, staffing, the state budget and legislative policy. Her responsibilities include leading continuous quality improvement efforts focused on the safety and well-being of children and teenagers.
McGonigal holds a bachelor's degree in human services from the University of Delaware.
The Governor’s Office said additional details about selecting a permanent secretary will be released in the coming weeks.
