The grant, part of the Feeding the Hungry initiative, aims to increase access to food and educate people on nutrition to reduce health risks for those experiencing food insecurity.

MILTON, Del. - The Milton Community Food Pantry handed out everything from whole frozen turkeys to stuffing to produce ahead of Thanksgiving for those in need.

Since there was an anticipated larger need for food ahead of the holiday, more volunteers and helping hands like Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester and Representative Stell Parker Selby helped pack and distribute food from the pantry.

The president of the pantry, Donna Murawski, says over the last couple of months the food pantry has served about 100 families per distribution, however Monday that number almost doubled.

"If you've gone to the store recently you know how expensive it is to buy food," said Donna Murawski. "Well, to pay for a Thanksgiving dinner, you're talking about a couple hundred dollars so a lot of people that we don't normally see all year round will come for some help during the holidays."

The food pantry says they are always looking for donations of food or grocery gift cards to help meet demand. Donations can be dropped off of Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
