HARBESON, Del. - A new trailhead on the Lewes-Georgetown Trail is set to open Nov. 4 south of Milton. There will be a celebration for the grand opening of the first phase of the Stephen P. Hudson Park, a trailhead and recreational area recently completed by the Sussex County Land Trust and its partners.
The park sits on a 30-acre property that was acquired in 2019, according to the trust. Its purpose is to provide public access to the entire property, which will continue to be developed for recreational use, and to provide a strategically placed trailhead located roughly halfway between Lewes and Georgetown.
The trail opened in October 2016. In June, DelDOT announced that it had secured the funding needed to extend the trail six miles.

"The development of the Stephen P. Hudson Park has been a decade-long vision of the Sussex County Land Trust and we are very excited that our efforts have finally become a reality," said Heidi Gilmore, board chair of the trust. "We hope this property will be utilized by many future generations to come. We also hope this trailhead will serve as a catalyst to the expansion of additional trail networks in this area."
Trust board members and partners will provide updates on the park's future development plans and other recent area initiatives on Nov. 4. Possibilities in future phases could include the addition of restrooms, a perimeter trail and a picnic and pavilion area.
The free event will take place the first Saturday in November from 2 to 5 p.m. at 18482 Cool Spring Rd. near the intersection with Route 9. There will be music, local barbeque, craft beer, pumpkin painting and more. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by walking, running or biking to the event on the trail. Parking will also be available onsite.
