As cell service struggles continue during Ocean City's popular beach concert events, two major carriers are taking steps to address the issue.

OCEAN CITY, Md. - As cell service continues to lag during Ocean City’s largest events, including the popular Oceans Calling festival, two major wireless carriers are looking to improve connectivity in the heart of the resort town.

Cingular (AT&T) and Verizon are seeking License Agreements from the town to install small cell antennas in the downtown area, including near the Inlet. While the City Attorney has already approved AT&T’s agreement, Verizon’s is still under review.

The move comes after cell service struggles continue during Ocean City's popular beach concert events. “We actually got the S.O.S. signal at the top and couldn't text anyone to let us know where we're at or anything,” said Cindy Speck, who attended Oceans Calling with her family. “Some are watching a concert, some are getting something to eat. You need to be able to contact your family and friends where you're at.”

The cell service problem has affected more than just eventgoers. One business in downtown Ocean City said the issue stretches beyond special events and continues throughout the summer.

Proposed ideas by AT&T.

AT&T has proposed outfitting existing city poles near the Inlet with small antennas, either on top, in the middle, or at the base. During Tuesday’s City Council work session, officials welcomed the proposal but also raised safety concerns. They asked AT&T to consider adding security cameras to the poles to enhance public safety in the high-traffic area.

Speck said improving coverage is a great idea, especially as the town continues to stretch its tourism season further into the year. “The Ocean City is trying to expand events longer and longer in the season. So definitely needed,” she said.

Town leaders hope the upgraded infrastructure will improve mobile service during summer events and support safety efforts for residents and visitors. The council is expected to revisit the matter on July 1.
