OCEAN CITY, Md. — With the summer season ramping up and popular events like Boardwalk Rock and Cruisin' OC already in the rearview, Ocean City is beginning to see the annual influx of vacationers eager to enjoy the beach and boardwalk.
But as visitors arrive, town leaders are addressing a concern, the use of public benches and areas for storing personal belongings and sleeping. Some public spaces, officials say, are being obstructed by items left unattended, raising health, safety, and accessibility concerns.

As visitors arrive, town leaders are addressing a concern — the use of public benches and areas for storing personal belongings and sleeping.
The Ocean City Council is set to hold the second and final reading of a proposed ordinance tonight at 6 p.m. The measure, titled "Sleeping, Obstructing and Storing Personal Property in Public Places," would make it illegal to sleep or leave personal property in public areas for more than 24 hours. Individuals found sleeping or storing personal property in public would first receive a written warning; repeat violations could result in arrest or fines.
Ocean City Manager Terry McGean emphasized that the town is not ignoring the needs of the homeless community. "We do have a homeless outreach team that works with those folks to help them find shelter and address their needs," he said. "But really, this ordinance is about public safety."
According to the Ocean City Police Department, there has not been a significant increase in homelessness, but some individuals have declined assistance offered by outreach teams.
A final vote on the ordinance is expected during Monday's council meeting.
