Fenwick Island town leaders are looking to repave some of the community’s most deteriorated roads before Memorial Day Weekend.

FENWICK ISLAND, Del. - As the busy summer season approaches, Fenwick Island town leaders are looking to repave some of the community’s most deteriorated roads before Memorial Day Weekend.

Residents like Michael Madden, who lives along one of the damaged streets, say the work is much needed. “Repaving after all the flooding we get, it wears away at the asphalt,” Madden said. “So it is a positive for us.”

On Thursday, officials discussed which roads to prioritize. Current plans include streets south of Schulz Road and a section of Bay Street. But depending on available funds from the Fenwick Island Foundation, more roads could be added to the project list.

Current plans include streets south of Schulz Road and a section of Bay Street.

“We may be able to do all of Bay Street this year,” said Paul Caldwell, who is helping coordinate the project. “Wright Street and McWilliams Street are relative locations being considered, as well as Ebb Tide.”

Paving is scheduled to begin April 28 and wrap up no later than May 15. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Madden supports the town’s proactive timeline. “It’s the best time before Memorial Day,” he said. “You have much more traffic going up and down the street.”

While spring temperatures are ideal for paving, officials say one concern remains: flooding. The bayside area of Fenwick Island is prone to high water, which could impact progress if conditions worsen during construction.
