SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Delaware state police are investigating multiple golf cart thefts around Sussex County.
Police say five have been stolen in total- two were stolen in Laurel, two in Greenwood and one in Lincoln.
Police say there is no suspect on this time and there is no current evidence to suggest these thefts are connected- but a state police spokesperson did say it was a possibility.
Golf carts are a popular way to get around along the coast. They are particularly popular in the Long Neck and Pot Nets areas.
Jacob Adams at Indian River Golf Cars on Long Neck Road says golf cart thefts are becoming more common.
"They're (golf carts) just evolving. They're more popular," he said. "They're becoming more street legal. So you're seeing more and more of them...that's why there's more and more theft of them."
Golf cart owner Harry Thompson says he's sad to see these carts stolen.
"I'm sorry the world is coming to this," he said. "There's so many thieves still out there... I just don't get it."
DSP says there are ways to deter thieves, including parking it in well-lit areas at night, locking it away, removing your keys from the ignition and getting locks for the steering wheel, pedal or wheels. Alarms, GPS and installing security cameras were also recommended.
Anyone with information regarding these thefts is asked to contact Delaware Crime Stoppers or can call 302-752-3798.
