BETHANY BEACH, Del. - Governor Carney announced Delaware and US Wind are negotiating a potential lease for 3 R's Beach in the Delaware Seashore State Park. The company says it wants to lease the land for two major offshore wind projects. The company says it is looking to run cables under the ground at the beach to move power from the turbines.
Locals who spoke with CoastTV have mixed opinions about the project.
"In general, I am in favor of it, I know there are some challenges and some limitations but I think it's a step in the right direction because we need to stop using fossil fuels for our energy needs," said Dean Dobbert, who lives in Dewey Beach.
Other locals worry how the project could affect wildlife.
"It could be an eyesore especially if they are really close to land or to the beaches, and they also might pose a threat to wildlife," explained Angel Torrago.
In an effort to make sure the project benefits everyone in Delaware, US Wind says they plant o kick in to fund dredging in coastal areas, the environmental education scholarship fund, the resiliency fund for climate change projects at state parks. According to Governor Carney's office, the cable landing lease for 3 R's beach would be $350,000 a year with annual increases.
