BERLIN, Md. - It's that time of year again, Holidays are over and Christmas trees and decorations come down. One local community is helping its neighbors dispose of real Christmas trees properly.
The Town of Berlin is hosting two events where residents can have their real Christmas trees recycled by just laying them out in front of their houses - for no cost.
"We then transport the trees to Worcester County Landfill where they turn them trees into mulch," said Jimmy Charles the Director of Public Works in Berlin.
A recycling effort that takes place every year.
"We collected about 80 trees so far today. It's part of the environment and the green space and keeping the trees and then recycling them into use at the landfill," added Charles.
Neighbors should keep in mind that they have to take off all decorations from trees before recycling them.
And artificial trees are not to be recycled
In Delaware - we spoke to DNREC who is also reminding everyone about recycling real trees, highlighting the environmental benefits this has.
"Delaware came to an agreement with Delaware Solid Waste Authority to ban yard waste from landfills in the state, so as a result of that, we've grown an extensive network of drop-off centers for yard waste and specifically this time of year for Christmas trees," said Adam Schlachter, Program Manager with DNREC.
Getting trees back out to mother nature.
If you were not able to recycle your tree Tuesday in Berlin you will have another opportunity to do so Wednesday January 12th at 6 a.m. and crews will pick up the trees from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
