REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is moving forward with major repairs to the Rehoboth Avenue Drawbridge, which is scheduled to begin in October 2025.
The 10-week-long project will focus on cleaning and repainting the bridge’s structural steel to prevent further corrosion, a vital upgrade for the frequently used bridge.
Today, a public information session was held at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center to address the upcoming work, with DelDOT outlining the project’s timeline, potential traffic disruptions, and coordination with marine traffic. The work, expected to be completed by April 2026, will affect both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, as well as boaters navigating the canal.
Community members, including Rehoboth Beach local Henry Ramon, expressed strong support for the project. Ramon emphasized that infrastructure improvements benefit everyone—whether driving, biking, or even using scooters. "It's important for tourism and overall safety," Ramon said, noting that roadwork plays a key role in enhancing the area’s infrastructure for locals and visitors alike.
The meeting highlighted the importance of timely repairs to maintain safety and efficiency for all users of the bridge. According to DelDOT if this work on the bridge was not completed, they estimate there could be major structural repairs needed within the next 7 to 9 years. This project will look to avoid that.
