Route 16 and 1 overpass making progress

MILTON, Del.- The overpass being built at Route 1 and Route 16 is making progress.

DelDOT says there have been no delays and the project is still expected to be complete in 2025.

Currently, crews are constructing the early stages of the bridge that will take Route 1 over Route 16. DelDOT says construction started to ramp up in the beginning of the year, and this overpass will make what is a dangerous intersection safer.

"The Route 1 and s16 intersection was really the intersection where we saw the highest number of crashes in any stretch of Route one from Milford to Lewes," said DelDOT's C.R. McLeod. "It was really of critical importance that we addressed that longstanding safety issue there."

There have been traffic shifts in the area as this overpass begins to take shape. Numerous other overpasses such as one in Ellendale and one in Georgetown are also in the works.

The project costs are $23 million.
