Running of the Bull

Dewey's annual Running of the Bull, a lively tradition featuring music, costumes, and community spirit. (The Starboard.)

DEWEY BEACH, Del. - One of Dewey Beach’s best-known events is back. The Running of the Bull celebrates its 29th year on Saturday, June 28, with the main event starting at 2 p.m.

Founded by Michael McDonnell and hosted by The Starboard, the annual tradition is centered on fun for the sake of fun. No real bulls are involved, just two people in a bull costume chasing a crowd down the beach and back. After the run, the “bull” faces off against a “matador” in a staged fight.

Other traditions include:

  • A Hemingway lookalike contest
  • Music and dancing
  • Costumes and beach attire

While the event is lighthearted, it also supports a good cause. Proceeds this year will benefit the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Department.
