Solutions for invasive grass in South Bethany canals

SOUTH BETHANY, Del. - The town of South Bethany is trying to address an issue with phragmites commonly known as reeds that have been growing by the canals.

The town has hired Envirotech, an environmental consulting company to start removing the reeds from around the inlet on the bayside specifically the Cat Hill area.

The reeds are very invasive and can cause damage to the integrity of asphalt roadways and choking out other species in the canals to name a few.

One local Sue Brown said these reeds are a huge issue for the town.

"I'm wondering, you know what's going to come after that? It sounds like the natural vegetation will take over," Brown said. "I would like to not see the canals blocked, its a beautiful view but it's a good idea to have bamboo and anything invasive removed out of here."

The spraying of the reeds has already begun in South Bethany and Envirotech said it should take another three weeks to complete.
