The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is proposing a realignment project to restore a severely eroded section of dunes along a one-mile stretch of Broadkill Beach.

BROADKILL BEACH, Del. — The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is proposing a realignment project to restore a severely eroded section of dunes along a one-mile stretch of Broadkill Beach.

The plan aims to realign the dunes to better match the current shoreline and restore a heavily damaged central portion of the beach. All work will occur above the average high tide line, according to state officials.

The state also plans to redistribute sand from the southern part of the beach to reinforce the northern end.

Some locals, like Chuck Lawrence, are voicing support for the initiative.

"I think to make it look more natural and make it look like it's not just a wall between here and the rest of the world," said Lawrence.

Jim Leonard, who lives on the beach, said dune protection is vital for the community.

“Certainly everyone, property owner-wise, wants to have a dune to protect their properties,” said Leonard.

The proposed work is expected to begin in October and last until spring 2026.
