GEORGETOWN, Del. — Two Sussex Academy Odyssey of the Mind teams are heading to the Delaware state finals on April 5 after earning fourth-place finishes in their regional qualifying tournament.

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition that blends STEM and the arts. Teams work together to solve both spontaneous and long-term challenges that involve performances, engineering and storytelling.

Sussex Academy’s sixth grade team—Jackson Cohen, Sarah Wiggins, Aubrey Farkas, Eshaal Atif and Diego Chaplin—tackled the “AstronOMical Odyssey” problem. The group created a fictional ancient civilization and presented original constellation stories as part of their long-term performance.

The seventh grade team—Kate Wilson, Zoey Shenoy, Neil Shenoy, Alyssa McKain, Joel Denham, Catherine Ellis and Jordan Buchanan—completed the “Mech-Animal Sidekick” challenge. Students designed, built and operated a robotic animal with the goal of spreading happiness.

Both teams will prepare to compete at the state tournament on April 5, with hopes of earning a spot at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals, scheduled for May 21-24 at Michigan State University.
