SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - Dart began its Stuff the Bus event at the Rehoboth Beach Safeway and the Food Bank of Delaware held its first drive through pantry for the holiday season at Crossroad Community Church in Georgetown. The Dart event will collect donations that will help fill shelves at local pantries, including the Food Bank of Delaware.
According to the Food Bank of Delaware, the mobile pantry alone distributed enough food for 1,500 households. About 60 volunteers are needed to hand out the three trucks worth of groceries. It's a resource that becomes even more necessary during the holidays.
Some volunteers for the drive say this may be the busiest mobile pantry they've seen yet. Volunteer Paula Gayman has helped load food into the trunks of cars for the last three years,
"It's always long... it's always long and there's always about a thousand plus cars that come to every mobile pantry.."
The Food Bank of Delaware is handing out everything from apples to turkeys, even with a pan to cook it in. Several mobile pantry drive throughs will be held throughout the season, allowing people like Brenda Beebe to be able to have a Thanksgiving meal,
"I think we got a turkey which is great because that's always one of the hardest to get - it's hard for a lot of people to be able to afford everything that they need so this really does help out a lot."
Between the two ongoing events, Dart and the Food Bank of Delaware hope to bring the community together to put the meaning to Thanksgiving.
"I mean it just speaks to the generosity of our community how folks really use this opportunity to give back and recognize that everyone should have something on their table for Thanksgiving so it's always special to see those buses pull up." said Chad Robinson, Food Bank of Delaware.
