GEORGETOWN, Del. - The Georgetown Police Department is setting its sights on a transformative facilities project that could cost up to $18 million, aimed at enhancing community safety and service.
Mayor Bill West expressed his discontent with the current police station, stating, "I am ashamed of the current building that the police have to work in now."
The proposed funding would support a new police station and public works building, funded by an additional tax for homeowners, averaging about $200 a year.
This proposal has sparked mixed reactions among locals. Some see it as a necessary investment, while others feel it has been poorly presented. "I don't like how this package was presented to the people," said Linda Dennis, an attendee of Monday's meeting.
Georgetown Police Chief Ralph Holm Jr. believes the upgrades are essential. "Our security will be the best. We'll be getting new equipment, and that's going to help us in the long run," Holm Jr. said.
The final decision rests with the community, which will have the opportunity to vote on the proposal in a special election set for November 18 at town hall.
