80 years ago, in the days following the end of World War II in Europe, the waters off Cape Henlopen witnessed a historic moment: the first enemy warship to surrender in U.S. waters since the War of 1812. U-858 was towed to what is now the fishing pier at Cape Henlopen State Park.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has honored a local veteran by paying off his family's mortgage in Smyrna. Montgomery, who served in the Army as a combat engineer, passed away in 2023 from colon cancer.
