Lewes officials are working to find a balance between improving nighttime safety and limiting light pollution that affects sky visibility. On Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m., the city’s Planning Commission will discuss a proposed light ordinance.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to list the Bethany Beach firefly, a small nocturnal beetle found in coastal Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Bethany Beach Nature Center gives CoastTV an insight to why this firefly is struggling.

Lewes city officials will meet today to address light pollution, discussing how man-made lighting impacts the night sky and local ecosystems. Proposed solutions could be reviewed as officials consider updating current regulations.

The initiative includes fully shielded light fixtures and minimal blue light emissions.
