Two endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles returned to the Atlantic Ocean this week after completing months of rehabilitation at the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
After months of intensive care, a young grey seal named Arcadia, the youngest ever treated by the National Aquarium, was released into the wild at Assateague Island State Park on Thursday, May 22.
So far this season, the team has responded to 23 stranded marine animals, including 13 grey seals, 6 harp seals, 2 harbor seals, and 2 common dolphins.
The National Aquarium’s Animal Rescue team said this has been the busiest season since 2019, with four seal pups currently getting care at the National Aquarium Animal Care and Rescue Center in Baltimore.
The MERR Institute rescued a one-year-old male harp seal Friday morning in Dewey Beach after observing signs of a possible infection.
This turtle is one of many MERR has responded to this season as a result of boat propeller injuries.
The National Aquarium Stranding Response team rescued a Loggerhead sea turtle struggling at Assateague Island. Opened in February, the center provides timely aid to stranded sea animals, working with the National Aquarium for comprehensive care.
