The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company is now caring for two ponies after one became seriously ill and another was abandoned after its birth.
A newborn Chincoteague pony died Saturday after suffering injuries when it was trampled by a stallion after becoming separated from its mother and herd, according to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Co.
The Saltwater Cowboys are rounding up ponies to make sure they are happy and healthy on April 10 and April 11 in Assateague before the annual pony swim.
“She began going in and out of consciousness,” the fire company wrote in a statement. “There was just something missing in her will and ability to [stand].”
The centennial Chincoteague Pony Swim is taking place on July 30, but a whole week of events precedes the swim.
