Open tryouts for the Women’s Professional Baseball League have begun at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. On Friday, players from 10 countries, including Japan, Australia, and Mexico, began showcasing their skills. The event includes baserunning drills, bullpen work, and a live game on Monday. Participants range in age from 17 to 57. Notable attendees include Mo'ne Davis, known for her Little League World Series win as a pitcher. Many players, like Allison Dougherty and Heather Strong, are excited about the opportunity to play professional baseball rather than softball.

An Oregon man has pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree manslaughter following a fatal crash with a community college softball team. Court documents filed Wednesday in Coos County Circuit Court show Jonathan Dowdy has also pleaded guilty to several counts of assault, one count of driving under the influence and one count of driving with a suspended license. State police said Dowdy was driving his pickup truck in April when he crossed a center line and crashed into a bus carrying 10 members of the Umpqua Community College softball team. A 19-year-old player and the team’s 46-year-old head coach died. Dowdy’s attorney didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Jen Pawol has made history as the first female umpire to work a regular-season game in the major leagues. Pawol worked as the first base umpire for Saturday’s first game of a split doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins. She enjoyed a quiet first inning. Pawol will work third base in Saturday night’s second game of the doubleheader and will be in the spotlight when she calls pitches behind the plate in Sunday’s final game of the series. Marlins manager Clayton McCullough and Braves bench coach Walt Weiss greeted Pawol when lineups were exchanged at home plate.
