OCEAN CITY, Md. - Another Special Event Zone is in place in Ocean City. The Special Event Zone will be in effect on October third through the eighth. With thousands of people expected to come to Ocean City this weekend for the Endless Summer Cruisin' event, Ocean City Police want extra regulations in place to keep people safe.
The Special Event Zone reduces speed limits in the designated zone and increases fines for speeding and reckless driving. Tani Baku, who owns Mitchell's Market on Philadelphia Avenue in Ocean City is a fan of the Special Event Zone.
"It keeps the town safer especially when there's a lot of people coming into the town," explained Baku.
According to the Ocean City Police, the Special Event Zone was created after a pop-up rally and burn out incident occurred at the H2OI event a few years back. Over the years, the Ocean City Police Department has made consequences for violators even more severe.
"We went back and got the additional legislation back in 2020, which made exhibition driving offences arrestable," explained Ashley Miller, Deputy Communications Manager for the Ocean City Police Department.
Maryland State Police and the Worchester County Sheriff's Office will help the Ocean City Police Department enforce the Special Event Zone rules.
